Ghanaian actor cum politician, John Dumelo has questioned Rent Control Department over why some landlords in Ghana continue to charge exorbitant rents.

Taking to Twitter, the 2020 National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon said it beats his imagination that some landlords keep charging two years rent advance, and also increase the charges as and when they want, adding that it puts unnecessary pressure on tenants.

“How can landlords still be requesting 2yrs rent advances for residential properties and increase the rent when and how they want? What is the rent control department doing? Tenants are suffering!!!”

Rent Bill

Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye in November 2020 disclosed that cabinet has given approval for the draft rent bill, which was expected to be deliberated on in parliament to be passed into law.

Speaking to the media on November 13, Mr. Asenso-Boakye stated that the rent bill clearly outlines the offenses that a landlord commits when they request rent payment in advance for more than one month in a monthly tenancy, more than one week in a tenancy that is shorter than one week, or more than one year in a tenancy that is longer than one year.
