The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr Samuel Dubik Mahama ESQ has stated that the company cannot continue to provide power to the people of Krobos freely.

Mr Mahama said ECG would not continue to tolerate a group of people not wanting to pay for electricity consumed.

According to him, the company will only work with towns, villages, companies and institutions that are ready to prioritize the payment of their bills.

He made this known at a media engagement in Accra, about the impending nationwide exercise to audit all meters starting from August 1, 2022.

Answering questions about the issue of the people of Krobo, who since 2014 have not paid for electricity consumed, the MD said, ECG saw it necessary to replace their post-paid meters to prepaid meters so that you have to pay before you enjoy the power.

The company policy was that “we wanted the people of Krobo to be responsible and pay up their bills.”

He said since 2014 up till now the people of Krobo have consumed power amounting to 168 million cedis.

“I cannot pay for that while other people of Ghana cannot also pay for that too.” He added

“Every single person in Ghana now consuming power is carrying what is happening in Krobo, why because if it is not your intention to pay for the electricity bill, why are you resisting prepaid meters,” he quizzed.

The only reason someone will resist a prepaid meter is that the individual doesn’t want to pay, “I have prepaid meters in my home and I pay so as many Ghanaians.”

“So if you described what is happening in Krobo as a national issue for me I don’t think so only that some people are feeding into a certain frenzy that is not necessary.

What ECG want to say about the Krobo issue is that “we wanted to give them prepaid meters and they were resisting the whole process and without that, we cannot do business in that area and we have gone ahead to replace some post-paid meters in the communities.

“Some have received the prepaid meters and life is going on smoothly for them,” he stated.
