A total of 1,800 households in the Western North Region have received poultry inputs under the government’s ‘Nkoko Nkitikiti’ initiative aimed at boosting local poultry production and improving livelihoods.
The programme was officially launched in the region by the Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, who described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening the agricultural sector, enhancing food security, and creating sustainable income opportunities for residents.
The ‘ Nkoko Nkitikiti’ project forms part of a broader national strategy to revitalize Ghana’s poultry industry. It was first launched at the national level in Kumasi on November 12, 2025, by President John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to increase domestic poultry production and reduce the country’s dependence on imported poultry products.
Speaking at the regional launch, Mr. Brentum said the vision behind the programme is to bring poultry production closer to ordinary Ghanaians.
According to him, the initiative will ensure that poultry farming is not limited to large commercial farms but becomes a viable economic activity in homes, schools, and communities across the country.
“The Western North Region is proud to be part of this national transformation. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for many farmers, youth, and households who will benefit from this programme,” he stated.
To support the successful implementation of the initiative, the region has received substantial inputs from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture through the Feed Ghana Secretariat and its suppliers.
The items distributed to farmers include 90,000 layer day-old chicks, 4,086 bags of starter chick feed, 180,000 doses of I2 vaccine, 90,000 doses of Gumboro vaccine, 18 kilograms of Penstrep, 12 kilograms of vitamin supplements, 17 kilograms of glucose, and 10 kilograms of coccidiostat.
“This initiative is about empowering our farmers to turn small-scale poultry activities into viable businesses that generate income and improve household nutrition,” he noted.
He added that increasing local poultry production will help stabilize the supply of eggs and poultry meat, improve protein intake among citizens, and contribute significantly to national food security.
The Regional Minister commended the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Feed Ghana Secretariat, regional and district agricultural departments, and other stakeholders for their efforts in coordinating activities leading to the launch.
He also urged beneficiaries to manage the inputs responsibly and strictly follow technical guidance from agricultural extension officers and veterinary professionals.
