A tragic incident at Kwame Krom, a suburb of Bibiani in the Western North Region, has left two men dead and one in critical condition following a failed rescue attempt during a borehole operation.
According to reports, the accident occurred when a young apprentice working with local borehole driller, Kofi Yesu, lost consciousness inside the borehole during drilling works. In a courageous effort to save his apprentice, Kofi Yesu entered the shaft but couldn’t come out.
In a desperate move to assist, a – 31-year-old landlord and community member, Fiifi who were reportedly supervising the project, entered the borehole to help. Tragically, he also succumbed inside the pit.
Local rescue teams managed to retrieve all three men. Kofi Yesu and Fiifi were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Bibiani Government Hospital. The apprentice, whose name has not yet been released, survived but remains in a coma under intensive medical care.
Preliminary reports suggest the incident may have been caused by collapse of the borehole.
The community of Kwame Krom is reeling from the loss of the two respected individuals. Authorities have begun investigations into the incident and are urging borehole operators and contractors to adhere strictly to safety guidelines to prevent similar tragedies.
