A tragic incident has struck the community of Sefwi Boako in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, leaving one person dead after being electrocuted and another in critical condition following an alleged act of negligence by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The incident occurred after engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana in Sefwi Wiawso reportedly carried out repair works on an electricity line on Tuesday but failed to turn off the main power supply before leaving the site.
Residents say the live line later caused the electrocution, resulting in the death of one individual and leaving another battling for life at a medical facility.
Angry residents of Sefwi Boako have accused ECG of gross negligence, insisting the incident could have been avoided.
According to community members, this is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred. Speaking to TV3 News, Chiefs of the community revealed that a similar incident claimed a life last year, yet no lasting solution has been implemented.
Traditional leaders are now demanding immediate and decisive action from ECG to prevent further loss of lives. They insist that the safety of residents must be treated as a priority, especially during maintenance works.
Agitated youths and residents also voiced their grievances, warning that they may resort to drastic measures if the situation is not addressed. Some residents threatened to stop paying electricity bills altogether should ECG fail to take responsibility and put in place effective safety measures.
The community has called on ECG and relevant authorities to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that such negligence does not reoccur.
