The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old woman, Sophia Amankwa, for allegedly possessing a large quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs at Dogo Junction near Ada in the Greater Accra Region.

The arrest occurred on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, after police intercepted a tipper truck with registration number GW 9768-12 during a targeted intelligence-led operation.

According to a statement issued by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dede Dzakpasu, the truck was stopped at Dogo Junction, but the driver fled upon seeing the police, abandoning the vehicle at the scene.

A subsequent search of the truck revealed 3,900 compressed slabs, tightly wrapped in cellophane and concealed in 52 sacks. The substances are believed to be Indian hemp and were packed in a manner consistent with bulk trafficking.

Preliminary investigations, ASP Dede disclosed, have linked the consignment to Sophia Amankwa, who is currently in police custody.

She is assisting the police with further investigations as efforts continue to track down the fleeing driver and other suspected accomplices.

“The Tema Regional Police Command is committed to intensifying operations against drug trafficking and related crimes. We are working tirelessly to dismantle such illegal networks and bring all culprits to justice,” ASP Dede emphasized in the release.

Police have urged the public to provide any information that may assist in the ongoing manhunt for the fugitive driver and others connected to the case.

Investigations remain ongoing.
