A 66-year-old woman, Madam Josephine Avlekpor, has been remanded in custody by the Ashaiman Circuit Court in connection with the death of a toddler who allegedly suffered fatal burns while being bathed with hot water.
Madam Avlekpor is facing a charge of manslaughter following the tragic incident, which occurred while the child was reportedly under her care.
According to facts presented before the court, Thomas Avugblah, a son of the accused, told investigators that his mother had agreed to take care of both the toddler and the child’s mother. The arrangement, according to the prosecution, was intended to provide support and assistance to the family.
However, tragedy struck when the child allegedly sustained severe burns during a bathing session involving hot water. The injuries are said to have resulted in the child’s death, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The child’s mother subsequently lodged a formal complaint with the police, leading to the arrest and prosecution of Madam Avlekpor.
Court proceedings have so far been marked by a series of adjournments, with the matter reportedly postponed several times without a full hearing being conducted. As a result, the accused has remained in custody for approximately four months pending the determination of the case.
The prosecution is expected to present evidence and call witnesses when the matter resumes, while the court continues to examine the circumstances that led to the toddler’s death.
The case has attracted public attention due to the prolonged remand period and the tragic nature of the incident, which has left both families grappling with the loss of a young child.
