Former New Patriotic Party presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen has lashed out at the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, for attacking him following his resignation from the party.
Mr. Kyerematen stated on UTV on Tuesday that it is regrettable for the Ashanti Regional Chairman to speak negatively about him following his withdrawal from the presidential contest and subsequent resignation from the New Patriotic Party on September 25, 2023.
“Who brought Wontumi to the party? Ask him. If he has to thank anyone then it should be me. I, Alan Kyeremanten brought Wontumi into the party. I brought him into the party for a good reason. He is a businessman, and he approached me in 2005 wanting to join the party. He told me he wasn’t ready to do politics in Ghana, but was enthused about the way I do my politics. I thought he was even joking. he kept following me anytime I attended an NPP event in Kumasi. Today, if we are talking about issues in the party who is Wontumi to dictate?” Mr Kyeremanten fumed
Mr. Kyeremanten described how he brought Wontumi to the party, saying that through his efforts, Mr. Boasiako was chosen Chairman of Bosomtwe Constituency and also pushed for him to become the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.
“I held his hand and told them [Executive] to make him [Wontumi] the chairman of the Bosomtwe constituency and I subsequently pushed for him to become the Ashanti Regional chairman too.” He added
According to the former Trade and Industry Minister, Wontumi approached him and expressed his admiration for the way he [Alan] conducts himself in politics.
He cautioned the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party to be careful in his utterances against him.
“If he was smart to know that Alan was the best person to guide him into politics then he should be very careful. If someone has helped you, yet you fail to appreciate the person’s effort then he needs to be careful. I have no problem if you campaign against me but let me advise him that when someone helps you in your career you don’t do that against him.” Alan said
Mr. Kyeremanten noted that he is not concerned about Wontumi choosing another candidate over him, but what he finds worrying is how he speaks negatively about him, rubbishing him as if he has not made an impact in his [Wontumi’s] political journey.
Mr. Alan Kyerematen’s outburst is a result of the directive from the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region asking all regional chairpersons in the 47 constituencies to immediately remove all posters, banners, and other campaign materials associated with the former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, from the party offices.
Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen resigned from the party and declared his intention to contest as an Independent Candidate.
According to him, the decision to exit the party and run as an Independent Candidate was based on various reasons such as leaders of the party supporting one particular aspirant to lead the party.
Mr. Kyerematen also mentioned that activities by leaders in recent years are not in line with what the founding fathers built the party on hence his decision form move away from the party to bring change and renewed hope to Ghanaians through his “Movement For Change” agenda.
