The Minister of Communication, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has urged the National Media Commission (NMC) and the National Communications Authority (NCA), to closely work together to monitor and regulate media contents as the 2024 general elections draw closer.

She said this during the launch of the National Communications Authority (NCA) 5-year strategic plan in Accra on Tuesday, January 16,2024.

The sector minister indicated that, even though press freedom is important, there is the need for media practitioners to avoid the spread of misleading information and create responsible content.

“ I am expecting the two regulators to work closely together this year to monitor what’s put out and work with the Ghana Journalists Association and Independent Broadcasters Association to sanitize the space for our collective good,” she stated.

She also mentioned that, as the two key regulators in the communication sector, ” I expect them to deepen that collaboration to ensure that together, they work to sanitize the airwaves, so we don’t see an upsurge in fake news, media publications, defamatory material, and things that will tend to disturb or threaten the peace and security of our nation”.

She further urged the NCA and the NMC to intensify their supervision duties more than ever to ensure fair publications in the media landscape.
