Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, has officially launched Ghana’s comprehensive Roadmap aimed at significantly reducing emissions from the country’s built and construction sectors.
This initiative outlines strategies for adopting low-carbon building materials and construction practices by 2050.
The Ministry, with support from UN-Habitat, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), initiated the “Transforming the Built Environment through Sustainable Materials” program in November 2023. This program seeks to address the environmental challenges posed by the built environment in Ghana.
According to UNEP, the building and construction sector is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions globally, responsible for approximately 37% of total emissions. The production and use of materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum contribute significantly to this carbon footprint, underscoring the urgent need for mitigation efforts in the construction industry.
The launch of the Roadmap reflects Ghana’s commitment to creating sustainable, resilient, and healthy communities, emphasizing the importance of environmentally friendly practices in the construction sector. By implementing this Roadmap, the government aims to foster a more sustainable future for the built environment in Ghana.
