Tragedy struck near the Madina Redco Flats late last night when a raging fire claimed the life of a young Nigerian woman and reduced over 150 structures to ashes.
The victim, identified only as Beauty, believed to be in her early twenties, was found charred beyond recognition. Her remains have been handed over to the Madina Police for further investigation.
The fire, which broke out around 11:15 p.m., swept through 140 wooden and 20 metal structures used for both residential and commercial purposes. Residents and shop owners watched helplessly as the flames devoured homes, belongings, and businesses in a matter of minutes.
Firefighters from the Madina Fire Station arrived on the scene at 11:17 p.m., quickly joined by reinforcements from Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and the GNFS Headquarters. Despite their swift response, the fire had already reached its fully developed stage.
It took nearly three hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control. The fire was confined at 12:02 a.m. and completely extinguished by 2:22 a.m. this morning.
In the midst of the devastation, there was some success — more than 200 nearby structures, including the Redco flats, were saved from the flames due to the efforts of the fire personnel.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
