Clashes between Frafra and Kusasi students trigger school closure, arrests, and military-led evacuations in Upper East Region.
Zuarungu Senior High School in Ghana’s Upper East Region has been temporarily closed down following a violent confrontation between two student groups — the Frafra and Kusasi communities — reportedly sparked by the theft of a mobile phone.
The clash, which erupted on Sunday, July 20, quickly spiraled into a destructive brawl, resulting in campus structures being torched and escalating tensions among students.
The Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, ordered the immediate closure of the school to prevent further violence.
According to sources, four students have been arrested in connection with the chaos. However, one suspect allegedly escaped police custody, reportedly grabbing a police officer’s magazine during the escape.
Fearing reprisal attacks, security forces — including police and military personnel — have been deployed to escort students from Bawku safely back to their communities under strict security.
Authorities have begun investigations, with security measures in place to restore order and ensure the safety of staff and students.
