The Combined Central Market Traders Union has expressed disappointment with the government of the New Patriotic Party for abandoning the Kumasi Central Market redevelopment project.

The Combined Central Market Traders Union has expressed disappointment with the government of the New Patriotic Party for abandoning the Kumasi Central Market redevelopment project.

In a press conference held by the union on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, the traders voiced out their frustrations, demanding the completion of the phase two project.

The project, initiated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in 2021, has seen little progress, leaving traders in a precarious situation.

Having been relocated for the market’s reconstruction, traders now find themselves in the Racecourse Market, facing unforeseen challenges and struggling to sustain their businesses.

The promised swift completion of the project has turned into a nightmare, with the contractor abandoning the site since January 2023.

Despite numerous appeals to government officials, including the Chief Executive Officer of Kumasi, Hon. Samuel Pyne, and the Ashanti regional minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah, the traders have seen no resolution.

As a result, there is a growing belief that the government moved them purposefully to a less-frequented market, endangering their livelihoods and business capital.

In a plea for intervention, the traders turn to their king, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, renowned for his unwavering support of community development.

Drawing inspiration from his successful involvement in the “Heal Komfo Anokye” project, the traders hope to generate revenue under his leadership to complete the market project themselves.

Expressing gratitude to former Trade and Industry Minister, Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyeremateng, the traders appeal to him to lead them in seeking permission from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for this initiative.

Mr. Kyeremateng’s continued support, even after leaving the NPP, is seen as a crucial asset in rallying the traders and garnering broader support.

The traders extend an invitation to all political parties and individuals to contribute to this cause when Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II takes the lead.

Additionally, a stern warning is issued to NPP delegates in the region, threatening to vote out incumbent Members of Parliament if they fail to address the concerns surrounding not only the Kumasi Central Market project but also other abandoned developmental projects.

As the traders prepare for the parliamentary primaries and the December 7, 2024, general elections, their message is clear – they demand action, accountability, and the fulfilment of promises made by the government.
