B/R: Residents cry out over heaps of refuse at Chiraa

Residents of Chiraa-Asebia electoral area in the Sunyani East Municipality of the Bono Region have expressed worry over heaps of waste that have littered the entire area.

Residents of Chiraa-Asebia electoral area in the Sunyani East Municipality of the Bono Region have expressed worry over heaps of waste that have littered the entire area.

The stench, according to the residents is unbearable, flies and snake hover around it, and there are fears of a possible outbreak of cholera if the situation remains unchanged.

Some residents indicated that, they have endured this for about a decade and the garbage is gradually swallowing them.

The residents said the situation had been persistent over the years, and called on authorities to solve the problem before it causes serious health issues.

In an interview with some of the residents, they indicated that the situation had created a lot of inconvenience for them as well as children.

Madam Yaa Asantewaa, a resident, said the situation became worse when it rained. Nothing has been done about it and all attempts to get authorities to fix the mess have proven futile.’’

Improper waste management is said to have negative impact on both the environment and public health.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), inadequate disposal of or untreated waste may cause serious health problems for populations surrounding the area of disposal. People exposed to hazardous waste are prone to serious health challenges, children are considered more vulnerable.

The residents of Chiraa-Asebia are however calling on appropriate authorities to as a matter of urgency intervene before the situation causes health hazard.

Meanwhile, Assembly member for Asebia electoral area, Ahmed Ibrahim has called for an attitudinal change in waste management as he blames some of the residents for improper disposal of refuse.

He also urged traditional authorities and other stakeholders to help find lasting solution to poor sanitation challenge the area.
