Award-winning international Afro-Reggae act Bongofari, was in fine form as he joined a galaxy of other Ghanaian music stars to perform at The Relief Concert, a fundraising event organised by Media General to support victims of the recent Akosombo Dam spillage.
Other artistes that performed at the event held at the TV3 premises at Kanda in Accra on November 1, included Abiana, KK Fosu, Kwabena Kwabena, Ras Kuuku, Edem, Perez Musik, Joe Mettle and Keche.
Bongofari is always an energetic performer, and he livened up the atmosphere with his trademark swagger and struts on the stage. Time allowed him to perform two songs: ‘Odo Reggae’ and ‘I’m Serious.’
“It was a delight being on the same stage with some of the nation’s best-known acts. But it was a big honour also to perform to raise funds to support our people who have been badly affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
“My wish is for everyone who can help to come forward and give whatever they can to help ease the trauma of the affected folks,” Bongofari said at the end of the concert.
Bongofari describes his style of music as Odo Reggae. It is a blend of Highlife, traditional Ghanaian, and Reggae rhythms, mostly rendered in Twi but with bits of English and French. He always has love undertones in the lyrics.
He won an award for his ‘outstanding contributions to Reggae and Dancehall and the music industry in Ghana today’ at this year’s Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards (GRDA) held on September 17 at LeShrine, LaBoma Beach in Accra.
“We are on a long journey to proclaim love and peace to all through Odo Reggae. As Osibisa sang long ago, the road could be muddy and rough but we’ll get there. We know Jah will always guide and guard our steps,” Bongofari said with optimism.
He is grateful more people are becoming aware of his style of Reggae and urged all to look out for his remaining gigs as the year draws to a close.
