Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abetifi Constituency, has retained his seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for a third consecutive term.
Dr. Acheampong, who also serves as Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, secured 22,287 votes in the 2024 parliamentary election.
His closest rival, Isaac Amoafo Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), garnered 9,333 votes, reaffirming the Abetifi seat as an NPP stronghold.
However, the MP’s 2024 performance reflects a decline of 2,448 votes compared to the 2020 elections, where he polled 25,035 votes, representing 72.42% of the total valid votes cast. In contrast, his NDC opponent in 2020, Samuel Asamoah, received 9,536 votes, translating to 27.58% of the vote share.
Dr. Acheampong first won the Abetifi parliamentary seat in 2016 with 23,432 votes, succeeding Peter Wiafe Pepera, who passed away while in office. Since then, he has maintained his dominance in the constituency, which remains a stronghold of the NPP.
Apart from his parliamentary duties, Dr. Acheampong has had an illustrious career in government. Initially appointed as Minister of State at the Office of the President in April 2017, he later became the Minister of State at the Ministry of the Interior in February 2020.
He was subsequently named Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture in February 2023, replacing Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, who resigned to pursue presidential ambitions within the NPP.
Born on November 27, 1972, in Suhum in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Dr. Acheampong hails from Nkwatia in the Kwahu East District. His contributions to both the constituency and national governance have earned him widespread recognition, despite recent fluctuations in voter support.
The Abetifi MP’s victory reinforces his position within the NPP as the party looks ahead to the upcoming presidential and parliamentary contests.
