The Ghana Police Service has denied accusations made by the Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia that the three persons who were arrested at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East Constituency for possession of firearms was conducted as a result of “orders from above.”
This comes after the NDC Chairman in a press conference alleged that the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and the Inspector-General of Police had informed him that the arrest of the said persons which included the Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, was carried out on the grounds of ‘orders from above.”
In a statement dated June 9, 2024, the Police Service stated that such allegations are false and baseless.
The statement clarified that the officers named by Asiedu Nketiah to have said that to him, had at no point in time made such statements.
“We would like to categorically state that the claims are false and without any bases. None of the officers mentioned in the video has at any point in time made any such pronouncement,” part of the statement read.
The Police explained that the three suspects were arrested after they found a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition in their vehicle at the offices of the Electoral Commission at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East constituency.
The suspects have however been granted bail.
