Dr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi chairs GRA Board

President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed Chief Executive Officer of Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited Dr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi to head the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Board.

Until his appointment, Dr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi in October 2019 revealed that he has the potential to turn around the fortunes of suspended electricity service distributor, Power Distribution Services (PDS) when given the chance, but he was considered at the GRA as Board Chair.

Tony Oteng-Gyasi Educated at the University of Ghana and the Ghana Law School in Economics and Law, Tony Oteng-Gyasi was born on 15th February 1955.

After spending nine years working with British Petroleum (BP) in Ghana in various executive marketing positions, he resigned in 1986 to set up his first company, a successful trading company, Tropical Products Ltd, which he nurtured to become a successful trading and manufacturing firm. It became the largest manufacturer of crates and pallets in Ghana.

In 1997, he expanded into cable manufacturing by incorporating, Tropical Cable and Conductor Ltd, with the active assistance of Empretec Ghana.

In 1997, he set up the Cable Manufacturing Company, called Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited. The modern factory is the only wholly Ghanaian-owned Cable Manufacturing Company in Ghana. The Company manufactures electric and telecommunications cables and is the first cable manufacturer in Ghana with ISO 9001 Certification.

By 2001 the company was producing $1 million worth of aluminum and copper cables. Currently, the company can produce about 6,000 tonnes of cables and conductors a year. It supplies cables to Volta River Authority (VRA), the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), mining companies, real estate developers, electrical contractors, and the general public. The company exports its products to several countries in the sub-region such as Nigeria, Liberia, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Sierra Leone.

In 2007 Tony again set up the only continuous casting and rolling factory for the production of EC Grade Aluminum Rod in West Africa. The company, Western Rod & Wire Ltd. has become a source of raw material for aluminum conductor manufacturers in the region.

He is also the President of the Association of Ghana Industries, married with five children.

GRA

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) was established in 2009 as a merger of the three revenue agencies, i.e. the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Value Added Tax Service (VATS) and the Revenue Agencies Governing Board (RAGB) in accordance with the Ghana Revenue Authority Act 2009, (Act 791).

Our core mandate is to ensure maximum compliance with all relevant tax law is in order to ensure a sustainable revenue stream for government, trade facilitation and a controlled and safe flow of goods across the country’s borders. We also administer a number of international agreements that govern our relations with other tax jurisdictions and institutions such as World Customs Organisation Protocols, World Trade Organisation Protocols, Double Taxation and Exchange of Information Agreements.

The Authority is made up of two operational divisions; Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD), and  Customs Division (CD) with assistance from the Support Services Division (SSD) and the Commissioner General’s Secretariat.
