Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana and the 2024 Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially conceded defeat in the December 7 elections.
In a heartfelt message, he congratulated former President John Dramani Mahama on his victory, pledging his full support for a smooth transition of government.
Although the Electoral Commission has yet to release the final results, Dr. Bawumia noted that his party’s internal collation confirms that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decisively won both the presidency and a parliamentary majority.
“I have just called H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia announced.
“While this was not our desired outcome, I acknowledge that this is part of the democratic contest, and I urge everyone to accept the result in the interest of national unity.”
Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to NPP supporters, party executives, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his wife, Samira Bawumia, for their unwavering support throughout his campaign.
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring peace, highlighting the importance of democracy in Ghana’s political process.
“I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of one thing—that Ghana will win. I stand by that today.”
As the nation awaits the Electoral Commission’s official declaration, Dr. Bawumia’s concession and call for unity are being seen as a significant step in maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
