Floods submerge Nkawkaw in Wednesday morning downpour

The rains which set in at dawn has wrecked severe damage with many struggling to come out of their homes.

Not only are many streets flooded but several homes have also been affected by the floods.

Republic FM team toured many of the affected parts within the Municipality to draw the reactions and emotions of the people living in and  around these areas to access how excessive the deadly downpour has been on the people by the day.

Andy Frimpong Manso reported that, the magnitude and level of the flood remains the same causing traders, pedestrians and vehicles locked up in an uncontrollable traffic.

The report also indicated that a lot of properties have been destroyed, especially traders who ply their trade on the road including that of carpenters, coffin makers and fitters.

According to the report, one 26-year old young man was capsized by the over speeding flooding but with the intervention of a good Samaritan he was rescued and sent to the hospital for medical assistance.

I was going to work this morning. So I saw a man, he would be 26  years and above. He passed by me and the next thing I saw was he was been carried away by the speeding flood, so I quickly jumped to the other side and held his hand. He is safe now. We took him to the Holy Family Hospital and by God’s grace and he’s responding to treatment”. An eye witness told the reporter

In an apparent interview with some of the affected victims at Nkawkaw Agbogloshie – Trado market, one aged man who was identified as Opanyin Amoah revealed that he has been leaving in the area since 1980.

According to him, until the bridge which serves the main road from Nkawkaw – four forty and its environs leading down to the main Nkawkaw Municipality is constructed, the area will continue to be flooded whenever it rains.

The road which has been taken over by the flood, making it difficult for commuters to ply the road, usually go through the distress from the rains that passes through the new Nkawkaw Station which houses vehicles that commute passengers to some major destinations across the country.

A visit to one of the important areas by the team, Nkawkaw Hotel Junction which leads to Kumasi revealed that, some houses have been overtaken by the flood, making it difficult for families to enter their homes.

Most of these affected families complained that, they have lost most properties, including beds, home gadgets and many other properties.

Meanwhile according to reports by the team, none of the various state bodies mandated to protect the citizenry, including the National Disaster  Management Organization (NADMO) has been able to visit the scenes to access the damage caused and also to support the affected persons.
