President Akufo-Addo has expressed his satisfaction with the impact that one of his government’s initiatives, the Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF), has had on people living in Zongo communities.
According to the president, the initiative has led to many significant projects in Zongo communities that have uplifted the lives of the people.
Speaking at the Eid-al-Fitr celebration at the Independence Square in Accra on Thursday, April 11, 2024, he expressed joy at having kept his word to establish the fund.
“I came to you in the cause of the 2016 electioneering campaign with the promise to make the challenges and concerns of Zongo communities an integral part of the governance process under my leadership. Seven years down the line, I can say with some measure of satisfaction that the promise has been fulfilled,” he stressed.
“Today, many Zongo communities around the country bear witness to the impact the projects undertaken under the Zongo Development Fund are having in the lives of their inhabitants. From the construction of school infrastructure to the provision of computer laboratories, to the enhancement of sanitary facilities, to the development of AstroTurf football pitches, we have uplifted the lives of thousands if not millions of people living in Zongo communities.”
He further urged all persons living Zongo communities to support the government to build the fund for the benefit of their communities.
“It is my hope the residents of Zongos will own the fund and leverage the support of government for attracting sterile support for the fund, rather than it becoming a holly government-funded initiative. I’m urging you to show a heightened sense of interest in the development of the fund so that we can grow it for successive generations of Zongo people.”
The Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF) was established by the Zongo Development Fund Act, 2017 (Act 964) to address the historical neglect of Zongo and Inner-City communities in Ghana under the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
The Fund is mandated to develop infrastructure in Zongo communities with an emphasis on educational, health, social welfare and community development.
