Former German captain and world cup winner, Lothar Matheus, has officially acquired a major stake in Ghana Premier League club, Accra Lions.
The ex-footballer will jointly own the club with football agent, Oliver König from Frankfurt and Ghanaian footballer Frank Acheampong, with the Accra based side said to be worth more than $6 million.
Official announcement of the takeover was made in Accra on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
According to Lothar Matthäus, his decision to invest in the club is due to the many football talents in Ghana.
Ghana has always had huge potential for talent, you can see that in the national team,” he said in an interview with Bild.
“We want to bring young players to Europe. In a serious way and already well trained. That’s why we’re also investing in the training ground here.”
Accra Lions are currently ninth position on the Ghana Premier League table, with 44 points – nine away from Medeama SC, who are on top of the league.
