The Divisional Executive Council of the Public Service Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority Division, has declared an indefinite strike effective June 10, 2024.
In a statement dated Sunday, June 9, the union stated that the strike comes after the government failed to take measures to curb the poor working conditions faced by its staff, even though their initial strike action was deferred and intervened by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.
“Recall that, the union deferred its intended strike scheduled for 24th March 2024 based on the intervention of the
Minister of employment and labour relations. The condition for the deferment of the strike action was that the government represented by the FWSC and the management of NIA facilitate the negotiation and implementation of better conditions of service for staff of the NIA among others. However, the government has not shown good faith in the negotiation process”, a portion of the release read.
PSWU further highlighted that the strike is premised on several factors including the government’s failure to address undue delays in the negotiation process and granting institution-specific allowances to NIA staff.
“Consequently, Services provided by our members at all the NIA District offices, Regional offices, Headquarters
and premium centres will cease indefinitely from Monday, 10th June, 2024 until further notice”, PSWU NIA division declared.
