NMC to deploy app to track Journalists safety during elections

The National Media Commission (NMC) has disclosed that it has developed an app set to be launched to monitor journalists’ safety during the December polls.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, George Sarpong, made this announcement at the Joy News National Dialogue on Defending Press Freedom which took place in Accra.

Mr. Sarpong in his speech, indicated that the app is purposely to track journalists’ safety.

“Regarding the safety of journalists, particularly for this election, we are deploying an app and software that will track safety issues. It is time- and GPS-stamped, so access to police stations and hospitals will be readily available on this app for the media,” he revealed.

Mr Sarpong further explained that the app is developed in such a way to notify the nearest police station in terms of any incident.

“If any incident happens, it will immediately alert the nearest police station, and the police will activate their response immediately,” he clarified.

Mr. Sarpong notified that the app is linked to local hospitals to provide emergency medical assistance.

“It is also linked to local hospitals so that wherever the incident happened, you can readily access the nearest hospital,” he added.
