The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that investigations into violence during the 2020 and 2024 elections found police and military personnel responsible for seven of the 15 deaths recorded across the country.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 4, 2024, the Minister explained that the fatalities occurred during security operations aimed at maintaining order at polling and vote collation centres.
“Investigations into the 2020 General Election incident at Odododiodio have been completed. The Attorney-General is prosecuting three individuals currently standing trial at the High Court, Criminal Division, Accra. The probe revealed that armed police patrols were responsible for four deaths, while military interventions caused three additional fatalities when restoring order amid chaotic crowds,” he said.
Muntaka added that the findings were compiled by a Special Investigation Task Force, which reviewed police dockets, conducted forensic and ballistic examinations, and inspected crime scenes to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
He further noted that while some fatalities resulted from clashes among political supporters, the involvement of security forces in several deaths cannot be overlooked and will be addressed under the law.
