The Ministry of Youth and Sports has admitted that the recent performances of the Black Stars has shed light on the structural problems in Ghana’s football.
This comes after the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
In a statement released on Thursday, January 25, the ministry expressed worry that it had in many years now invested in the team but it failed to produce the required results.
“Over the years, the Ministry, especially under the administration of the current Government wholeheartedly supported our national teams, the Black Stars in particular. We created a conducive and enabling environment, invested in the development of the team and introduced performance-based reward systems.”
“Regrettably, the recent and continued poor performance of the Black Stars highlights fundamental structural and systemic deficiencies in our football ecosystem and journey. This is such that despite our unwavering support and considerable investment, leaving no stone unturned, the team has not delivered and results do not commensurate with efforts and resources invested,” part of the statement read.
In view of this, the Ministry has called for urgent action to restructure Ghana’s football, adding that it will in conjunction with other stakeholders put out a strategic plan to address the problem in coming days.
“In the coming days, the Ministry with national team stakeholders, will announce a strategic plan to identify the causes and the road map towards the revival of the Black Stars.”
