The Black Meteors of Ghana have handed themselves a boost in the CAF U-23 AFCON qualifiers after a 2-1 win against Mozambique.
A brace from Hearts of Oak striker, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh did the job for Ibrahim Tanko’s men in the first leg of the CAF U-23 AFCON second-round qualifier.
Ghana was off to a solid start as they dictated the pace of the game in the opening stages and looked for the opener, but the host were also solid in defense and kept frustrating the Black Meteors.
Both teams went into the break without finding the back of the net, but the Black meteors came out stronger in the second half and were rewarded a penalty kick fifteen minutes into the second half.
Afriyie Barnieh made no mistake from the spot and gave his team the lead.
Coach Tanko’s men pushed for a second and were awarded another penalty after Barnieh was fouled in the box and made no mistake once again to put his team 2-0 up.
Despite mounting a challenge, Mozambique was only able to score a consolation goal in the 88th minute.
The second leg is scheduled for Sunday, October 30, at the Baba Yara Stadium.
A win for Ghana in Kumasi will take them into the final round of the qualifiers to face either Ethiopia or Algeria.
The Black Meteors are expected to start camping Ahead of the second leg on Wednesday.
