Youth of Dzelukope in the Keta Municipality of the Volta region are demanding justice for their colleague, Jerry Kpesenu, a 45 year-old- landlord who died following an alleged assault by the police.
According to sources, a tenant of Jerry Kpesenu on Thursday June 6, 2024 contacted an air-conditioner repairer from Wasco repairs to render services but upon arrival, Mr. Kpesenu prevented the repairer stating that, as the landlord, he should have been prior notice.
Reports further revealed that, the deceased, Mr. Kpesenu, seized some tools belonging to the repairer which led to him calling the police to intervene.
“The police upon arrival began assaulting the deceased, tied him up before taking him to the station where he met his untimely death in police custody”, the source said.
The youth who were dressed in black and red outfits on Monday June, 10 at a press conference indicated that, their colleague was a healthy man before the assault and unprofessional conduct of the police.
They are therefore calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare to “immediately interdict the officers involved in this inhumane and unprofessional conduct to pave way for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of our beloved brother”.
Again, they demanding “a 5 member committee to include an appointed member from the deceased’s family and another from the Keta Youth and request for an independent autopsy in a highly professional pathology center in Ghana at the cost of the Police”.
Mr. Jerry Kpesenu left behind a wife and child.
