Highway Authority assures public of prioritizing damages caused at Tantra Hill underpass

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has issued a strong warning to the public following reports of theft and vandalism at the retaining wall near the Tantra Hill underpass along the Achimota–Ofankor stretch of the N6 Highway.

A viral video posted by social media group Buzstopboys on TikTok revealed exposed reinforcement bars at the site, raising public concerns about the structural integrity of the underpass.

In a statement released on May 14, 2025, the GHA confirmed that a preliminary inspection conducted by its engineers found a section of the retaining wall had suffered minor damage, resulting in the exposure of the steel reinforcement. The Authority attributed this to spalling—a condition where concrete peels or flakes off—exacerbated by the removal of the exposed steel by unknown individuals.

Despite the damage, the GHA assured motorists and pedestrians that the underpass remains safe for use, based on their engineering assessment. Plans are underway to carry out repair works to prevent further deterioration of the structure.

The Authority strongly condemned the theft and described it as an act of vandalism against public infrastructure. It reminded the public that such actions are punishable under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), specifically Section 114, Subsection 4(b), which prohibits tampering with road structures.

Citizens are being urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity near public infrastructure to law enforcement agencies or directly to the Ghana Highway Authority’s Public Affairs Division.
