The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu has stated that the Supreme Court of Ghana is contributing to the failure of parliamentary democracy in the country.

Mr. Iddrisu made this statement in Parliament reacting to the landmark ruling by the Supreme Court that Deputy Speakers do not lose the right to vote while presiding.

This ruling comes to clear the confusion that erupted in the country when the 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bekwai in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Joseph Osei Owusu presided and voted for the approval of the 2022 budget.

Following the confusing, a lawyer cum law lecturer, Justice Abdulai subsequent to the November 30, 2021 clash between Speaker Bagbin and his First Deputy, invited the Supreme Court to pronounce as unconstitutional, Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu’s action of counting himself for the purposes of quorum.
