The Assin Fosu District Court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, has remanded a trader, Monica Ampomah, 28, into police custody for three weeks for allegedly inflicting deep cutlass wounds on her 10-year-old daughter.

The accused is alleged to have beaten the Class Five pupil with a cane and a metal rod before slashing her on the head, hand and finger with a cutlass.

The complainant, Gilbert Takyi, a nurse at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, reported the matter to the Central North Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.

According to the facts of the case, the accused, who is the mother of the survivor, had for about two months noticed some whitish discharge in the child’s underwear whenever she washed them.

She allegedly suspected that the survivor was being sexually abused by an unknown man and was concealing the information from her.

On July 21, 2026, at about 3:00 a.m., the accused allegedly woke the survivor and questioned her about the discharge, demanding that she identify the man responsible.

The survivor reportedly denied that anyone had sexually abused her. However, the accused was allegedly dissatisfied with the response and caned her while continuing to demand an explanation.

The accused then allegedly picked up a metal rod used to grip pots during the preparation of banku and struck the survivor, demanding that she tell her the truth.

When the survivor maintained that no one had done anything to her, the accused allegedly picked up a cutlass and slashed her on the head, hand and finger, causing injuries.

The accused subsequently allegedly drove the survivor out of the room at about 4:00 a.m.

With nowhere else to go, the survivor reportedly went to her school proprietress and narrated the alleged ordeal.

The proprietress subsequently informed the complainant, Gilbert Takyi, who rushed the survivor to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital for medical attention before lodging a complaint with DOVVSU.

A police medical report form was issued to the complainant for the survivor to undergo medical examination and treatment. The completed medical report was subsequently endorsed and returned to the police.

The accused was arrested, cautioned and charged with causing harm.

Prosecutor Matilda Osaah Buabeng presented the case before the court.

The court remanded Monica Ampomah into police custody for two weeks and ordered her to reappear on September 3, 2026.

The court also ordered that the accused undergo a mental examination to establish her mental status and determine whether she is fit to stand trial.
