The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders and other occupants on portions of land at Agbogbloshie popularly referred to as Nzema Market earmarked for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market a one-month notice to vacate.
The notice period is expected to expire on August 28, 2026, after which the Assembly will begin removing structures located on the affected portions of land.
All affected traders and commercial operators at the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, the Nzema Market and portions of the Yam Market will be relocated to a parcel of land prepared by the Assembly solely for the affected person’s.
The month-long notice was formally served on Tuesday as the AMA marked structures on the affected portions of land for demolition, following a series of consultations with traditional authorities, market leaders, traders and other stakeholders over the proposed redevelopment and planned clearance of the area.
Following the marking exercise, the Assembly is expected to embark on a public education and sensitisation campaign from Wednesday, August 5, to inform traders, community leaders and the general public about the redevelopment, its benefits, the clearance process and the arrangements being made for affected persons.
Addressing the personnel after the exercise, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey expressed appreciation to the security officers and members of the AMA Task Force for their commitment and hard work in ensuring the successful execution of the operation.
He explained that the stakeholder engagement process began with a meeting involving the Ga Traditional Council, after which the Assembly invited key stakeholders, including chiefs of Old Fadama, the leadership of the Yam Market, Cargo Station, Nzema Market and Agbogbloshie Market in general, to its Head Office for further discussions on the proposed redevelopment and relocation arrangements.
The Mayor said the Assembly initially proposed a two-week period for affected traders and operators to vacate the designated area but extended the deadline to one month following concerns and requests raised by the Chiefs during the consultations
