Officers from the Accra Regional Police Command have arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers”, for allegedly threatening the life of the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Mr. Yaw Ampofo.
The 46-year-old former boxer was taken into custody on Monday, 24th August 2026, following the publication of a viral video on social media in which he is alleged to have issued the death threat.
According to a press statement issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with ongoing enquiries.
“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to assure the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law,” the head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Ms. Juliana Obeng, stated in the release.
Police authorities have further cautioned members of the public to exercise restraint and desist from circulating unverified reports regarding the incident while investigations continue.
“The Command further urges the public to refrain from spreading unverified information concerning the matter while investigations are ongoing,” the statement added.
Police say further updates will be made available as the investigation progresses.
