GFA backs Queiroz to remain Black Stars coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unanimously recommended that Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz continue as head coach of the Black Stars following his performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that the Executive Council had assessed the 73-year-old coach and agreed that he should remain in charge of the national team.

Queiroz was appointed on a four-month contract to replace Otto Addo and was tasked with leading Ghana at the 2026 World Cup.

His future has remained uncertain in recent weeks, particularly amid reports of outstanding payments and ongoing discussions over a possible new contract.

However, Asante Twum said in an interview that the GFA Executive Council had unanimously agreed to recommend that Queiroz stay on in a longer-term role.

He explained that the recommendation does not automatically secure Queiroz’s continuation, as the final approval rests with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which is expected to finance the coach’s salary.

According to Asante Twum, Queiroz has been informed of the GFA’s decision, although the coach’s response and details of any proposed contract remain unclear.

Further negotiations between the GFA, the Ministry and Queiroz are expected before his future with the Black Stars is officially settled.

Financial and contractual matters will need to be resolved before a new agreement can be concluded.
