The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to ensure a smooth transition of power to the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
According to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, ensuring that the NDC takes over smoothly is the best course of action for the NPP.
Speaking during a press in Accra on Thursday, May 9, he accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of its attempt to aid the NPP to maintain power.
“We do not expect the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to act as the conduit through which Akufo-Addo will implement his avowed determination not to hand over to the visionary, experienced and trustworthy John Dramani Mahama.
“NPP must choose peaceful transfer of power from their NPP President to the National Democratic Congress in their own interest. The 2024 elections will not be business as usual,” he stressed.
Asiedu Nketiah advised the EC to be transparent in order to enhance its reputation, adding that ensuring transparency will be beneficial to the entire country.
“The EC must sit up and answer the 35 questions posed by the NDC on the stolen biometric equipment and the EC has no option but to allow our agents to record the serial numbers of the Biometric Verification Devices (BVR) kits deployed for this registration exercise if they have nothing to hide.
“Improved transparency is beneficial to all stakeholders but above all, it enhances the credulity of the election’s administration body which in our case, is the electoral commission of Ghana.”
He also urged traditional leaders, civil society organizations, the clergy, and other leaders to join the NDC in demanding transparency and fairness in the 2024 elections.
“Let me use this opportunity to repeal our call to the Ghanaian population particularly through the civil society organizations, chiefs, opinion leaders, leaders of faith-based organizations, and so on to join us to demand more transparency and fairness which is the necessary pre-condition for peaceful elections. Anybody who is interested in peaceful elections must begin demanding transparency and fairness in the elections. You don’t sleep over injustice and then come around to call the one who is being treated unfairly to secure peace for the country.”
