Mahama promises 20% Rural Teacher Allowance

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled an initiative aimed at incentivizing teachers to work in rural and underserved communities.

To tackle the persistent issue of teacher shortages in these areas, Mahama has committed to introducing a special allowance amounting to 20 percent of basic salary for teachers who accept postings in these communities.

He noted that the bold initiative seeks to attract and retain top teaching talent in rural areas, thereby bridging the educational divide between urban and rural Ghana.

Mahama’s commitment emphasizes his administration’s focus on equity and quality education for all.

“Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and it is essential that we recognize their hard work and dedication,” Mahama stated.

“This allowance will not only motivate teachers to serve in rural areas but will also demonstrate our appreciation for their selfless service.”

The introduction of this special allowance is expected to enhance teacher morale, reduce turnover rates, and improve student performance in rural schools. By prioritizing education in underserved communities, Mahama’s initiative aims to empower future generations and foster national development.

Education stakeholders have welcomed Mahama’s proposal, viewing it as a significant step towards addressing the rural-urban education gap. As Ghana works towards achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), Mahama’s focus on rural education represents a timely intervention.

Through this promise, Mahama reaffirms his commitment to enhancing the welfare of teachers and promoting inclusive education.

The 20 percent rural teacher allowance serves as a beacon of hope for Ghana’s rural communities, ensuring that their children receive quality education and a brighter future.
