All is set for the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Executive Elections, with a total of 1,020 delegates expected to cast their ballots in Saturday’s crucial polls.
The election has attracted 34 aspirants vying for 11 key executive positions, with final preparations underway for what is shaping up to be one of the most keenly contested internal party elections in the region.
Saturday August 14’s vote is widely being viewed as a defining moment for the party in its electoral stronghold, as delegates choose a leadership team that will be tasked with rebuilding the NPP’s grassroots structures, restoring internal cohesion, re-energising the party base, and positioning the Ashanti Region as a formidable electoral force ahead of the next general elections.
The spotlight, however, remains firmly on the Regional Chairmanship contest, which has evolved into a high-stakes showdown between two influential party stalwarts: Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, and Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, former Member of Parliament for Bantama and former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Both contenders enter the race with significant political experience and strong networks within the party, but they represent contrasting strengths and leadership approaches, making the chairmanship battle the centrepiece of the election.
At the Kumasi Jubilee Park, the venue for the polls, the atmosphere is already charged, with banners and posters of the various aspirants dominating the entrance and surrounding areas.
The Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, and the party’s Election Committee have all indicated their readiness for the exercise, assuring delegates of a peaceful, transparent, and credible election process.
