The Dambai Divisional Police Command has taken into custody Kwabena Badam, a 35-year-old farmer, following the fatal shooting of a man suspected of attempting to steal yams from a farm at Abongo No. 1 in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.
The incident occurred around midnight on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Preliminary reports indicate the deceased was caught on the farm allegedly trying to steal a sack of yams when Badam opened fire, killing him instantly.
Local sources revealed that Badam had frequently complained to authorities about recurring crop theft on his property prior to the shooting.
Following the incident, the farmer surrendered himself to the Dambai Divisional Police, where he remains in custody assisting with ongoing investigations.
Philip Kwadwo Bidaba, Assembly Member for the Kwame-Akura East Electoral Area, confirmed he was alerted to the shooting early Sunday morning. Upon reaching the police station, Bidaba noted that community members requested to view the body for identification, but police declined as the body had already been secured for transport.
Accompanying the Assembly Member and relatives of the suspect, police officers subsequently transferred the body to the Worawora Government Hospital Mortuary in the Biakoye District for preservation and autopsy.
Formal police statements regarding the identities of both the deceased and the suspect remain pending as investigations continue.
