The National Identification Authority (NIA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has launched a free Ghana Card registration exercise for basic school pupils across the Volta Region.

The initiative, which commenced on Tuesday, May 6, 2026, is part of a nationwide programme aimed at enrolling children aged between 6 and 14 into Ghana’s national identification system.

The Volta and Oti regions are the first to benefit from the phased rollout, with registration teams expected to move from school to school to capture biometric data of eligible pupils in both public and private institutions.

Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Darlas, said the exercise in the region will last at least 21 days to ensure maximum coverage.

According to him, the initiative is designed to strengthen the national identity database while improving children’s access to essential public services from an early age.

He disclosed that the nationwide programme is expected to register about 3.1 million children.

Mr Darlas urged parents and guardians to cooperate by providing required documents such as birth certificates or passports to facilitate the process.

He also noted that children who are not in school will be given the opportunity to register at designated community centres.

The NIA assured that the exercise is completely free for all children within the target age group, describing it as part of broader efforts to promote inclusive national identification and support effective planning for social services.
