The Government of Ghana on Monday, 17th August 2026, received the eleventh batch of citizens evacuated from South Africa under the ongoing second phase of repatriation following recent xenophobic attacks.

The 87 returnees were met at the Kotoka International Airport by the Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Harold Agyeman, alongside senior government officials and representatives from collaborating state agencies.

Addressing the arrival, Ambassador Agyeman assured the returnees of the government’s commitment to supporting their successful reintegration into society. He urged them to remain hopeful and apply the skills and experiences acquired abroad to rebuild their lives and contribute to national development.

Emphasising the necessity of African solidarity and peaceful coexistence, Ambassador Agyeman noted that despite the ordeal, Ghanaians and South Africans remain part of a unified continental family. He added that the administration under President John Dramani Mahama has provided financial packages to facilitate their immediate resettlement.

A representative of the evacuees expressed profound gratitude to President Mahama, Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ghanaian High Commission in Pretoria, and all supporting institutions for securing their safe return.

Key state bodies, including the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, Ghana Red Cross, and Port Health authorities, were present to facilitate health checks and logistical aid.

This latest arrival brings the total number of repatriated citizens to approximately 1,600 since May 2026, with an estimated 300 additional nationals scheduled to return in the coming weeks to conclude the second phase of evacuations.
